Sens. Ossoff and Rev. Warnock Announce Major Tax Cut for Georgia Families

Families will start receiving a tax cut of $250 to $300 per child per month on July 15

Georgia’s Senators cast the decisive votes to pass the tax cut for families in the American Rescue Plan

Washington, D.C. — Georgia U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock today announced that a major tax cut they’ve secured for Georgia families will begin to arrive in bank accounts and by check next month.

Beginning July 15th, families of more than one million Georgia children will begin receiving $300 in monthly tax refunds per child under the age of 6, and $250 per child ages 6 to 17.

Senators Ossoff and Warnock championed the provision, known as the Child Tax Credit, and cast the decisive votes to pass the tax cut earlier this year as part of the American Rescue Plan.

The tax cut is intended to help Georgia families rebuild from the pandemic and recover financially.

The American Rescue Plan, passed in March thanks to Sens. Ossoff and Rev. Warnock, ensured families will receive an annual tax refund worth $3,600 per child under 6 and $3,000 per child from 6 to 17.

Half of the tax cut will come via monthly direct payments through the end of 2021, and the rest of the tax cut will be a refund on next year’s tax filing.

According to the IRS, the vast majority of Georgians will automatically receive these payments. Like the stimulus checks that Ossoff and Warnock passed earlier this year, this tax cut will come in the form of direct deposit, a paper check, or a debit card.

All Georgia families making up to $150,000 jointly or $112,500 for a family with a single parent will get the full credit.

Georgians who have not had to file 2019 or 2020 taxes — or did not previously claim stimulus check payments — can still sign up to receive the tax cut here.

And for the first time, the Child Tax Credit will be fully refundable, meaning low-income Georgia families who pay little or no federal taxes will receive the financial help in full.

“Senator Reverend Warnock and I worked together to pass this tax relief for Georgia families, and we’re proud to announce that we’ve delivered,” said Sen. Ossoff. “Georgians with questions about how to access this tax cut should contact my office. I am here to serve.”

“The support set to hit working families’ bank accounts next month will lift tens of thousands of Georgia children out of poverty,”said Sen. Rev. Warnock. “I am proud to have helped secure this vital support alongside Senator Ossoff, and I’m going to keep working to help permanently eliminate child poverty in Georgia and across our nation.”

Both Senators have championed making the tax cut permanent, leading the charge in the Senate to push President Biden to do so.
