Sen. Ossoff Working Across the Aisle to Reduce Physician Shortage in Georgia

Washington, D.C. — U.S Senator Jon Ossoff is working across the aisle to reduce the physician shortage in Georgia.

Sen. Ossoff recently cosponsored the bipartisan Fair Access in Residency (FAIR) Act to help address the growing physician shortage in Georgia by making it easier for doctors to access Medicare-funded residency programs.

According to a 2023 study, osteopathic graduates predominately enter primary care fields, which are severely understaffed across rural Georgia.

The bipartisan bill, first introduced by Sens. Steve Daines (R-MT), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), and Angus King (I-ME), aims to help ensure that graduates of osteopathic programs in Georgia have a fairer chance at securing local residency positions.

“Families in Georgia should never have to worry that there won’t be enough doctors available to help in an emergency,” Sen. Ossoff said. “That’s why I am working with Republicans and Democrats to strengthen our health care workforce in Georgia.”

Sen. Ossoff continues working to strengthen health care for Georgia families.

Earlier this year, Sen. Ossoff cosponsored the bipartisan States Handling Access to Reciprocity for Employment (SHARE) Act of 2025 to simplify the existing multistate license application process that often hinders the hiring of health care professionals during critical national shortages.

In November, Sen. Ossoff cosponsored the bipartisan Accelerating Kids’ Access to Care Act to ensure kids covered by Medicaid in Georgia face fewer delays when receiving specialty care.

In April, Sen. Ossoff cosponsored the bipartisan Resident Education Deferred Interest (REDI) Act, which would allow recent graduates of medical school to defer their student loan payments without interest while they serve in a medical or dental internship or residency program.
