Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff has successfully tasked a Federal Inspector General to investigate unsafe conditions for Georgia renters.
Sen. Ossoff worked with Republicans and Democrats to require a Federal watchdog investigation of conditions at rental units that receive financial support from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Sen. Ossoff’s bipartisan amendment was passed last summer by the Senate Appropriations Committee and then became law on February 3 as part of bipartisan government funding legislation.
The new provision directs the HUD Office of Inspector General (OIG) to investigate properties with close-to-failing Real Estate Assessment Center (REAC) scores.
“Families deserve to feel safe in their own homes. Working across the aisle, I passed this bipartisan amendment into law, an important step to ensure affordable housing in Georgia and across the country has the staffing and inspections to meet health and safety standards,” said Sen. Ossoff.
Sen. Ossoff continues working to improve housing conditions for Georgia families.
In 2025, Sen. Ossoff brought Republicans and Democrats together to require a Federal watchdog investigation into the housing affordability crisis and to help ID solutions to the crisis.
In 2024, Sen. Ossoff introduced the bipartisan Access to Homeownership Act to help renters purchase homes by including their positive rental payment history in reports to credit bureaus, helping boost credit ratings.
Also in 2024, Sen. Ossoff convened a U.S. Senate Human Rights Subcommittee Hearing in Roswell to receive testimony from renters and experts about the mistreatment of tenants by corporate landlords in Georgia and nationwide that receive Federal funds, and threats to the safety of children in dangerous living conditions.
