Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff today secured a commitment from the U.S. Army to help ensure completion of a new forensic laboratory at the Gillem Enclave.
Sen. Ossoff, Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, today held a hearing about funding priorities for military construction projects and highlighted key projects in Georgia, including the need for upgraded facilities at the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory on Ft. Gillem, the Department of Defense’s only full-service criminal forensic laboratory.
Last year, Sen. Ossoff’s bill with Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock to help build a permanent facility for the forensics investigations unit based at Fort Gillem was signed into law.
Sen. Ossoff serves as the top Democrat on the Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee, positioning him to fight for and deliver Federal funding for key Georgia projects impacting national security, military readiness, quality-of-life for servicemembers and military families, and more.
During the hearing, Sen. Ossoff spoke with Lieutenant General David Wilson, Deputy Chief of Staff for the United States Army, and raised the importance of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory to national security.
“I also want to raise with you the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Lab in Forest Park, Georgia, on the Fort Gillem Enclave, which is DOD’s only full-service criminal forensic lab. And I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the facility. It’s remarkable what they do, both for traditional criminal forensics, but also for material that’s secured and exploited from battlefields around the world,” Ranking Member Ossoff said.
“Last year, working alongside Senator Reverend Warnock, we successfully helped extend the authorization needed to complete the construction of a new forensic lab at the Gillem Enclave,” Ranking Member Ossoff continued. “Can I have your commitment, General Wilson, to work with me and the Subcommittee to ensure that this project has the resources necessary to see it through?”
Sen. Ossoff secured Lieutenant General Miller’s commitment to work with him, the Subcommittee, the community, and Ft. Gillem leadership to ensure the base is prepared and successful in receiving this new mission.
