Sen. Ossoff Launches Inquiry to Help More Georgia Moms Access Affordable Breastfeeding Options

Sen. Ossoff calls on insurance companies to increase breastfeeding options for moms in Georgia

According to a study, 60% of moms nationwide stop breastfeeding earlier than intended

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is calling on insurance companies to cover more products and services to help Georgia moms who are breastfeeding.

This week, Sen. Ossoff launched an inquiry with several insurance companies to make it easier for mothers in Georgia and across the country to access breastfeeding options for their babies.

“I’ve heard from moms in Georgia about the challenges they face trying to breastfeed their babies, especially after returning to work,” Sen. Ossoff said. “The Affordable Care Act requires insurers to cover breastfeeding supplies and support services, yet for too many mothers, accessing the equipment they need to breastfeed is much harder and more expensive than it should be.”

Health insurance companies are required to provide coverage for breastfeeding supplies and services. Yet, hundreds of mothers in Georgia continue to face challenges when looking to breastfeed their children and keep their newborns healthy.

Sen. Ossoff is pushing for answers from Aetna (CVS Health), Elevance Health, Cigna, Humana, and UnitedHealth Group on the specific steps the companies are taking to provide coverage for quality breastfeeding equipment that will help keep new mothers and babies healthy.

Last year, Sen. Ossoff worked across the aisle to pass into law the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which strengthens workplace protections for pregnant workers in Georgia and nationwide.
