Sen. Ossoff Helping Connect South Georgia Families with Community Services

Valdosta, Ga. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is delivering new resources to help connect Valdosta families with community services.

Today Sen. Ossoff announced he is delivering new federal funding to extend United Way’s 211 system into South Georgia. The United Way 211 system is a free, confidential service that helps connect families with community services, such as mental health resources, support for seniors, volunteer opportunities, and more.

Sen. Ossoff brought Republicans and Democrats together to deliver $213,000 for the project through this year’s bipartisan government funding package, working alongside Congressman Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (GA-01).

“I’ve heard directly from Lowndes County leaders about the need to establish 211 services. That’s why I got to work and brought Republicans and Democrats together to establish a new 211 Center for families in Valdosta to access services and support they need,” Sen. Ossoff said. “I thank Greater Valdosta United Way President and CEO Michael Smith for bringing this proposal to my office and for his leadership in the community.”

“In 2023, 211 received 15.4 million calls and made over 19 million service referrals nationally. Thanks to federal support, the GVUW is thrilled to bring this essential number to South Georgia to connect people and human services. 211 is also critical for disaster response and recovery by taking pressure off the local 911 system. Once fully operational, the real-time data will help elected leaders understand the region’s needs and create efficient service delivery,” said Michael Smith, President and CEO of Greater Valdosta United Way.
