Sen. Ossoff Delivering Resources to Upgrade Northeast Georgia Drinking Water Infrastructure

Athens, Ga. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is delivering resources to upgrade drinking water infrastructure in Northeast Georgia.

Today, Sen. Ossoff announced he is delivering funding to The Upper Oconee Basin Water Authority, a water authority in Northeast Georgia providing drinking water to roughly 500,000 Georgians.

The Upper Oconee Basin Water Authority plans to use the Federal funding toward its ongoing projects to increase the water treatment center’s capacity for residents of Barrow, Jackson, and Oconee Counties.

Sen. Ossoff brought Republicans and Democrats together to deliver $1,000,000 for the project through this year’s bipartisan government funding package.

“All Georgia families need and deserve access to clean water. That’s why I brought Republicans and Democrats together to upgrade the Upper Oconee Basin Water Authority’s regional drinking water facility. I thank Oconee County Chairman John Daniell, Commissioners Chuck Horton and Mark Saxon, Water Resources Director Tim Durham, and Northeast Georgia Regional Commission Executive Director Burke Walker for bringing this proposal to my office and for their leadership in the community,” Sen. Ossoff said.

“The Bear Creek Reservoir and water-treatment facility is a regionally-transformative project. Over the last 20 years, it has proven how regional cooperation and partnerships among local governments leads to wide, public benefit. This new investment will enable the Upper Oconee Basin Water Authority and this facility to continue its success by expanding capacity and fulfilling a critical need to continue serving Northeast Georgia and its growing populations well into the future,” said Burke Walker, Executive Director of the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission.
