NEWS: Sens. Ossoff & Warnock, Rep. Williams Announce Upgrades to Passenger Experience & Safety at MARTA’s Five Points Station

New project part of MARTA’s overall plans to upgrade Five Points Station

WATCH: Sen. Ossoff previously committed to work with Transportation Secretary Buttigieg to advance the project

Atlanta, Ga. — Today, U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock and Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) announced historic upgrades are coming to MARTA’s Five Points station through the bipartisan infrastructure law.

The newly funded project aims to improve passenger experience and safety at Five Points, part of MARTA’s overall plans to upgrade the station with improved public spaces, below-ground improvements, and transit-oriented developments, like more housing, economic development, and business growth.

The $25 million project — funded through the bipartisan infrastructure law — will improve bus bays and revitalize the station plaza and public spaces around Five Points — aimed at improved passenger safety and experience.

“Five Points Station is the heart of MARTA’s transit system, and this project will upgrade safety and the passenger experience,” Sen. Ossoff said.

“The more easily Georgians can get from place to place, the more they thrive, and the more our communities and economy thrive,” said Senator Reverend Warnock. “Safely and efficiently getting Georgians where they need to go is a top priority of mine. And that’s why I was so glad to work with my colleagues in the Georgia delegation to secure robust federal investments that will help MARTA increase ridership and service at the iconic Five Points Station in the heart of downtown Atlanta. These critical funds will help ensure MARTA’s rail-car doors open up new opportunities for all residents in and around the Atlanta area, and I’m going to keep fighting for strong federal investments that help move Georgians and our state into a brighter future.”

Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05), a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee said, “This grant is another example of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law investing in people. Five Points MARTA station is one of our most essential pieces of infrastructure, linking communities throughout the Fifth Congressional District and beyond. Money from this grant, along with the additional $1.4 billion in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law coming to Georgia for public transportation, will help MARTA continue to be a driver of equity and opportunity for everyone in Atlanta, no matter their ZIP Code or bank account.”

“The award of this $25 million RAISE Grant is a big win for Atlanta and will enhance connectivity beyond our city limits—just as connectivity reached beyond partisan lines so our Federal, State and local leaders could deliver a significant infrastructure investment for our communities,” said Mayor Andre Dickens. “Thank you to President Biden, Transportation Secretary Buttigieg, Congresswoman Williams, Senators Ossoff and Warnock and other members our Federal delegation, Governor Kemp, and everyone here at the local level who worked together to strengthen an equitable, safer and modern transportation infrastructure for the people we serve.”

“Transit has proven essential in creating equitable opportunity and sparking development in the metro Atlanta region,” said MARTA Interim General Manager and CEO Collie Greenwood. “The resounding, bipartisan support for this project from the City of Atlanta, state of Georgia, and now federal government underscores its importance and the long-term economic impacts that go beyond the renovation of a rail station and reveal the true transformative nature of transit.”
