Good afternoon.
As Iranian ballistic missiles continue to strike across the State of Israel, I know this remains a time of deep apprehension and concern for many in Georgia’s Jewish community.
Over the past week, as I enjoyed moments at home with my newborn baby daughter and young Jewish family, I thought often of those huddled in shelters across Israel without the same security. I know the images of missiles overhead Israeli cities and destroyed homes are deeply upsetting — a reminder of Israel’s vulnerability as a small nation in close proximity to committed enemies. While I celebrate the success of Israeli air defenses downing incoming Iranian missiles, I mourn the terrible loss of life that has resulted from those that have landed.
My staff and I have spoken in recent days with constituents who have family traveling in the region; constituents who, like me, have family living in Israel; and constituents who have family members deployed to the Middle East in the Armed Forces. I understand and share your profound concern for the safety of our loved ones. As always, my highest priority is the national security of the United States, and top of mind every day is the safety of my constituents and of U.S. military servicemembers, diplomats, and intelligence professionals overseas defending our nation.
Earlier this week in Washington from my seat on the Senate Intelligence Committee I was briefed for nearly two hours on the latest developments in the region. As you are aware from press reports, the situation is evolving rapidly.
America’s commitment to our ally is demonstrated again by public reports of the U.S. military’s efforts defending Israel from incoming missiles. In recent months I cosponsored bipartisan legislation to strengthen cooperation between the United States and Israel countering threats from missiles, rockets, and unmanned aerial vehicles. I also recently asked fellow members of the Senate Appropriations Committee to allocate an additional $500 million for U.S.-Israel collaborative defense programs including Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow — programs I have supported every year in the Senate.
For decades, the Iranian government’s support for terrorist proxies and enrichment of uranium have destabilized the region. The United States has repeatedly made clear in recent months — and the President stated again this week — that diplomatic solutions remain available. The Administration has indicated it is weighing a range of policy options. Like any major international crisis, this one presents serious risks for the United States, for our servicemembers deployed overseas, and for the world, and must be handled by the Administration with great skill. I remain closely engaged with my national security staff and expect further consultation of Congress from the Administration in the hours and days to come.
My office remains on-call and available to any constituents abroad who require assistance from the State Department. Please never hesitate to call us directly at 470-786-7800 or email at casework@ossoff.senate.gov.
Sincerely,
Sen. Jon Ossoff
