Sen. Ossoff, Georgia’s Congressional Delegation Urging Trump Administration to Help Georgia Growers Export More Pecans

In 2023, following Sen. Ossoff’s push, the Republic of India announced a major 70% cut to tariffs on U.S. pecan exports — helping growers sell more products

Atlanta, Ga. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is continuing his work to help Georgia pecan growers sell more pecans abroad.

Sen. Ossoff recently joined Congressman Rick Allen (GA-12) and Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock and Reps. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (GA-01), Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), Lucy McBath (GA-06), Rich McCormick (GA-07), Austin Scott (GA-08), and David Scott (GA-13) in urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to expedite the process of obtaining market access for more Georgia pecans to be sold to India.

“While U.S. pecan exporters are now successfully exporting shelled pecans to India, the product purchasers in India have requested the U.S. to export in-shell pecans, which enables the pecans to travel in a more shelf-stable state and allows buyers to finish processing upon arrival in India,” Sen. Ossoff, Rep. Allen, and the group wrote to USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins. “Once the U.S. has submitted the required documents to India, India’s Dried Fruit and Nut Council has elected to advocate to the Indian government for a swift solution.”

According to a report by the USDA, in 2022, the United States exported more than $1.3 million of pecans to India.

Now, USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service projects that pecan exports to India could reach up to $5 million annually — coming after Sen. Ossoff successfully worked with the Republic of India’s government to reduce India’s tariffs on U.S. pecan imports by 70% — a major win for pecan growers in Georgia.

Sen. Ossoff continues working to support Georgia’s pecan growers.

Last July, Sens. Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock pressed the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to provide adequate promotional resources for marketing Georgia pecans to the global market.
