As Drinking Water bill advances, <\/em>Ossoff<\/em> urges funding to replace lead pipes in public schools: \u201cEvery child deserves clean, healthy drinking water\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

State of Georgia estimates\u00a0there could be\u00a0high lead levels in hundreds of faucets in Georgia public schools<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington, D.C.<\/strong> \u2013 U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff today launched a push to include funding for replacement of lead pipes at public schools in Georgia and nationwide in the \u201cDrinking Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Act,\u201d which could reach the U.S. Senate floor in coming weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a letter to Senator Tom Carper (D-DE), Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Sen. Ossoff argued the funding is needed to replace lead pipes at public schools, noting that Georgia, along with 22 other states, received an \u201cF\u201d in a non-profit \u201cGet the Lead Out\u201d study that looked at protecting students from lead in drinking water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery child, in Georgia and nationwide, deserves clean, healthy drinking water,\u201d Sen. <\/strong>Ossoff<\/strong> wrote. <\/strong>\u201cMost, if not all states and school districts need federal assistance to replace leaded water pipes at public schools. Therefore, it is imperative that S. 915 include funding for lead remediation programs to replace water pipes and reduce lead exposure for children.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Ossoff states in the letter, according to the Georgia\u2019s own CDC, there is no safe level of lead exposure for children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the moment, Georgia\u2019s State Board of Education is testing 800 schools for lead in drinking water, and preliminary estimates suggest high levels of lead in hundreds of Georgia school faucets.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Sen. Ossoff\u2019s proposal is included in the bill, federal funds would be available to help public schools replace lead pipes and keep children healthy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
