Washington, D.C.\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014\u00a0U.S. Senators\u00a0Jon Ossoff\u00a0and\u00a0Reverend Raphael Warnock are\u00a0demanding answers as the Trump Administration\u00a0reportedly ends\u00a0civil rights enforcement within the Department of Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sens. Ossoff and\u00a0Rev. Warnock\u00a0are\u00a0demanding answers<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0Education\u00a0Secretary Linda McMahon\u00a0after\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0the Trump Administration intends to outsource\u00a0responsibilities\u00a0of\u00a0the Department of Education\u2019s\u00a0civil rights\u00a0division\u00a0to the Department of Justice (DOJ), leaving\u00a0unanswered\u00a0questions about the status of pending cases of potential civil rights abuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under\u00a0the\u00a0new\u00a0agreements\u00a0between\u00a0the Education Department\u2019s Office for Civil Rights (OCR)\u00a0and\u00a0the DOJ,\u00a0the Justice Department will\u00a0take on\u00a0civil rights enforcement<\/a>,\u00a0some of\u00a0which includes \u201ccomplaint investigation\u201d and\u00a0\u201cresolution processes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This announcement\u00a0follows\u00a0the\u00a0gutting<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0the Office for Civil Rights\u00a0last year, when the\u00a0Education Department\u00a0closed<\/a>\u00a0a total of seven OCR offices across the nation,\u00a0which\u00a0impacted\u00a0\u201cnearly 60,000 public schools\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cover 30 million K-12 students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u00a0write with serious concerns regarding the Department of Education\u2019s potential dereliction of its duty to ensure children in Georgia receive a quality education free from discrimination,\u201d\u00a0Sens. Ossoff\u00a0and Rev. Warnock\u00a0wrote to Secretary McMahon.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cDespite this responsibility, the Trump Administration has chosen to fire Department of Education staff and enter into interagency agreements to outsource the agency\u2019s formal duties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u00a0have heard from constituents that have been harmed by these actions, and\u00a0we\u00a0are\u00a0concerned this Department will continue to harm Georgia students.\u00a0We\u00a0demand that further action to dismantle the Department of Education be stopped,\u201d\u00a0Sens. Ossoff and Rev. Warnock\u00a0continued.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Ossoff continues to hold the Trump Administration accountable for\u00a0gutting key civil rights programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June, Sen. Ossoff joined Senate colleagues in\u00a0urging<\/a>\u00a0the Trump\u00a0Administration\u00a0to halt changes affecting the Office for Civil Rights and preserve the Department\u2019s capacity to enforce federal civil rights laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October 2025,\u00a0Sen. Ossoff\u00a0joined\u00a0Senate colleagues in\u00a0urging<\/a>\u00a0the Trump Administration to halt illegal efforts to shut down the Department of Education\u2019s administration and enforcement of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
