Ossoff Again Presses HHS Secretary Kennedy for Failing to Address Cancelation of CDC\u2019s Cyclosporiasis Parasite Monitoring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Washington, D.C.&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2014 As cases top 11,000 nationwide, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is pressing HHS Secretary Kennedy on cuts to Cyclosporiasis monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Sen. Ossoff is again demanding answers from U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. about his decision to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/state\/georgia\/atlanta\/2026\/07\/14\/parasite-behind-explosive-outbreak-not-part-of-required-monitoring\/90912239007\/\">terminate<\/a>&nbsp;the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s (CDC\u2019s) Foodborne&nbsp;Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet)&nbsp;required&nbsp;surveillance of Cyclospora&nbsp;cayetanensis, the parasite responsible for cyclosporiasis and is again requesting answers on the progress of Federal efforts to investigate and contain it.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to recent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/Health\/11500-cyclosporiasis-cases-reported-41-states-cdc\/story?id=134979908\">reports<\/a>, there are over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cyclosporiasis\/php\/surveillance\/index.html\">11,500 cyclosporiasis cases<\/a>&nbsp;being investigated across 41 states, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cyclosporiasis\/php\/surveillance\/index.html\">Georgia<\/a>, with more than 4,100 cases being confirmed, and more than 300 people hospitalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sec. Kennedy failed to respond to Sen. Ossoff\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/July-16-2026-Cyclosporiasis-Outbreak-Response.pdf\">initial inquiry<\/a>&nbsp;on the cyclosporiasis outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have failed to address my questions regarding your inexplicable decision to terminate the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s (CDC\u2019s) Foodborne&nbsp;Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet)&nbsp;required&nbsp;surveillance of Cyclospora&nbsp;cayetanensis, and the progress of federal efforts to investigate and contain it,\u201d<strong>&nbsp;Sen. Ossoff wrote to Sec. Kennedy.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cYour silence amidst an ongoing outbreak of diarrheal disease is indicative of the reckless arrogance with which you demolished America&#8217;s public health defense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Ossoff continues working to protect public health, the CDC, and its workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April, Sens. Ossoff and Rev. Warnock&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sens-ossoff-rev-warnock-demanding-answers-following-reports-that-cdc-repairs-still-delayed-after-shooting\/\">demanded answers<\/a>&nbsp;from Secretary Kennedy after reports that the CDC Atlanta Campus is still in need of repairs and improvements following last year\u2019s shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March, Sen. Ossoff worked with Republicans and Democrats to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-successfully-defeats-effort-to-defund-the-cdc\/\">ensure<\/a>&nbsp;the CDC receives crucial funding to protect the American people, successfully defeating the Trump Administration\u2019s proposed 50% cut in funding for the CDC in the FY26 budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last October, Sen. Ossoff led Georgia\u2019s Democratic Congressional Delegation in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-georgias-congressional-democratic-delegation-demand-answers-on-latest-round-of-chaotic-cdc-firings\/\">calling on<\/a>&nbsp;Sec. Kennedy to answer for the chaos and disruption at the CDC that has marked his tenure, including the firings of CDC employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last June, Sen. Ossoff&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SnBLCbAY5rk\">spoke<\/a>&nbsp;in the Appropriations Committee markup of the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education funding bill about bipartisan efforts to protect the CDC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in June, Sen. Ossoff&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-demands-answers-on-report-that-cdc-program-to-prevent-fentanyl-overdoses-has-been-frozen\/\">demanded<\/a>&nbsp;answers from the Trump Administration following an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/16\/nx-s1-5468535\/fentanyl-trump-addiction-funding\">NPR report<\/a>&nbsp;that the CDC Program to prevent fentanyl overdoses had been frozen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, Sen.
