Ossoff Raising Concerns About Bioterrorism &#038; Biosafety Associated with Artificial Intelligence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Washington, D.C.&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2014 U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is raising urgent concerns about bioterrorism and biosafety associated with artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Ossoff launched an inquiry with Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Michael Kratsios&nbsp;after researchers and CEOs of several AI companies signed an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/screendna.org\/\">open letter<\/a>&nbsp;urging the Federal government to implement mandatory screening of orders for artificially generated nucleic acids due to concerns that artificial intelligence could be misused by bad actors to produce chemical and biological weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October 2023, President Biden directed the Federal government to address the misuse of synthetic nucleic acids and increase biosecurity measures. President Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/initial-rescissions-of-harmful-executive-orders-and-actions\/\">rescinded<\/a>&nbsp;this order and later&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/05\/improving-the-safety-and-security-of-biological-research\/\">directed<\/a>&nbsp;OSTP to revise or replace the 2024 framework. However, it is not clear if this framework has been revised or replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout adequate safeguards, including both screening and traceability processes, malicious actors could use advances in AI to develop potentially dangerous pathogens and biological weapons,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>Sen. Ossoff wrote.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Ossoff continues working to protect Georgians from harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, Sen. Ossoff worked with Republicans and Democrats&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-championing-bipartisan-legislation-to-prosecute-child-predators-online\/\">to crack down on criminals<\/a>&nbsp;preying on kids online by cosponsoring the&nbsp;<em>Ending Coercion of Children and Harm Online (ECCHO) Act<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April, Sen. Ossoff&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-pressing-big-tech-over-sexual-exploitation-of-children-online\/\">launched<\/a>&nbsp;inquiries with Apple, Google, Meta, Amazon, and X over tech companies\u2019 advertisement and distribution of \u201cnudifying\u201d apps that allow users to swiftly create explicit images of children and teenagers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, Sens. Ossoff and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)\u2019s bipartisan&nbsp;<em>REPORT Act<\/em>&nbsp;was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/breaking-sen-ossoffs-bipartisan-bill-to-protect-children-from-online-exploitation-signed-into-law\/\">passed into law<\/a>, requiring for the first time websites and social media platforms to report crimes involving Federal trafficking and enticement of children to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). In 2025, the first full year after implementation, online platforms&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/ncmec-sen-ossoffs-bipartisan-law-forcing-big-tech-to-report-child-predators\/\">submitted<\/a>&nbsp;105,877 reports \u2013 a more than 1,100% increase that underscores the impact of expanded reporting requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in 2024, during a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing, Sen. Ossoff&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/watch-sen-ossoff-presses-mark-zuckerberg-on-childrens-safety-online\/\">pressed<\/a>&nbsp;Mark Zuckerberg, whose company owns Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp, on threats to children\u2019s safety and their mental health on social media platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, Sen.
