Washington, D.C.<\/strong> \u2014 U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is championing a bipartisan bill to protect kids online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Ossoff is working to bring Republicans and Democrats together to pass the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA)<\/em><\/a>, bipartisan legislation he co-sponsored that would impose new requirements on digital platforms to protect children from being targeted online with harmful content.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis bill will restrict online spying and advertising targeting children and empower parents to take back control of their kids\u2019 sensitive and private data,\u201d Sen. Ossoff said.<\/strong> \u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019m working to bring Senators from both parties together to pass this bill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legislation establishes a \u201cplatform duty of care,\u201d requiring companies to \u201cexercise reasonable care in the creation and implementation of any design feature\u201d in order to prevent and mitigate harms to minors. The legislation also mandates safeguards, parental tools, reporting mechanisms, privacy protections, and enforcement tools to ensure compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA)<\/em> passed in the Senate last Congress<\/a> with Sen. Ossoff\u2019s support, and he\u2019s now working again to pass it through the 119th Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Ossoff continues working to protect kids online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This spring, Sens. Ossoff, Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), and Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n (D-NM) introduced the bipartisan Data Elimination and Limiting Extensive Tracking and Exchange (DELETE) Act<\/em><\/a>, legislation that would enable and empower Americans to request that data brokers delete their personal data, including for children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2024, Sen. Ossoff\u2019s bipartisan REPORT Act<\/em> with Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) became law<\/a>, which \u2014 for the first time \u2014 requires websites and social media platforms to report crimes involving Federal trafficking and enticement of children to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January 2024, Sens. Ossoff and Chuck Grassley (R-IA)\u2019s bipartisan Preventing Child Sex Abuse Act of 2023<\/em> was signed into law<\/a> to strengthen Federal protections against the sexual abuse of children, including online exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a December 2023 U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing<\/a>, Sen. Ossoff pressed FBI Director Christopher Wray to address sextortion schemes targeting children online amidst a reported 700% increase<\/a> in their frequency since 2021 in Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
