After mass CDC firings, Sen. Ossoff secures commitment from Trump Budget Director to visit Georgia, meet with CDC employees<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington, D.C.<\/strong> \u2014 U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff pressed President Trump\u2019s Budget Director on the Administration\u2019s proposal to gut the CDC\u2019s budget by over 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Sen. Ossoff demanded answers in a U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee hearing from the Trump Administration\u2019s Budget Director, Russell Vought, about the Administration\u2019s plan to gut the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) budget by over 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under questioning from Sen. Ossoff, Director Vought refused to acknowledge that the Administration fired or tried to fire nearly a quarter of the CDC workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou guys are making mistakes, and I want to focus on the mistakes that you\u2019re making at the CDC. Have you visited the CDC, Mr. Vought, by chance? It is the flagship epidemiological and public health agency for the country and indeed for the world,\u201d said Sen. Ossoff.<\/strong> \u201cYou have fired or tried to fire nearly a quarter of the CDC workforce, and your budget request for FY26 would cut the CDC budget in more than half.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou are destroying this institution, and whatever criticism you have about their past performance, they are essential to public health and epidemiological defense in the United States. You\u2019re crushing morale, you\u2019re crushing capability, and you’re destroying my constituents\u2019 lives,\u201d Sen. Ossoff continued.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Ossoff later secured a commitment from Director Vought to come to Georgia and meet with CDC staff in the wake of the Administration\u2019s mass firings and plan to slash the CDC budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Sen. Ossoff continues working to defend the health and safety of Georgia families and protect the CDC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Sen. Ossoff joined a group of Senators<\/a> slamming U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. for firing the entire Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) at the CDC, which they warn puts Georgia families at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May, Sen. Ossoff and a group of Senators demanded answers<\/a> from Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on the elimination<\/a> of theCDC team responsible for making sure families who are trying to have children through in vitro fertilization (IVF) can do so in an informed and safe manner \u2013 despite President Donald Trump\u2019s promise to support families seeking IVF treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April, Sen. Ossoff condemned<\/a> the Trump Administration\u2019s continued attacks on CDC following reports of mass layoffs of thousands of CDC employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
