Ossoff Presses Against Any Sale of Okefenokee, Secures Commitment from Interior Secretary\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Washington, D.C.&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2014&nbsp;U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff today pressed against any sale of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, securing a commitment from the Interior Secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies hearing today,&nbsp;Sen. Ossoff&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GfTtwoG54B8?si=m8b6e4NmMpbrt3Ou\">secured a commitment<\/a>&nbsp;from Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to not pursue any sale of any part of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Ossoff\u2019s question to Secretary Burgum comes after House Republicans recently<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/05\/07\/g-s1-64760\/house-republicans-approve-amendment-authorizing-the-sale-of-federal-lands\">approved<\/a>&nbsp;an amendment to sell thousands of acres of public lands in the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know there&#8217;s been some public discussion about sale of public lands. Can you give an unequivocal guarantee that you will not pursue any sale of any part of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge?\u201d&nbsp;<strong>Sen. Ossoff asked Secretary Burgum, to which he said \u201cYes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last fall, the Interior Department announced that the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge will be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/okefenokee-national-wildlife-refuge-be-nominated-join-unesco-world-heritage-list\">nominated<\/a>&nbsp;to join the UNESCO World Heritage List \u2014 a prestigious honor that has widespread bipartisan support in Georgia and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-rep-buddy-carter-launch-bipartisan-push-to-make-okefenokee-wildlife-refuge-a-world-heritage-site\/\">for which Sen. Ossoff has advocated for years.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Ossoff also asked Secretary Burgum to continue the Interior Department\u2019s support for this designation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, who served as Secretary of Agriculture during the last Trump Administration, has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/politics\/sonny-perdue-throws-support-behind-okefenokees-world-heritage-bid\/545KWDYUKZEDVBH5JJUCXFWOYQ\/\">backed the Okefenokee\u2019s bid<\/a>, as have other local leaders across the State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GfTtwoG54B8\"><strong>Click here to watch Sen. Ossoff continues his strong advocacy to protect the Okefenokee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January of this year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-announces-progress-to-expand-protections-for-okefenokee-wildlife-refuge\/\">following Sen. Ossoff\u2019s push<\/a>, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/press-release\/2025-01\/minor-expansion-acquisition-boundary\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;progress to expand protections of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last December, following Sen. Ossoff\u2019s bipartisan push, the U.S. Department of the Interior&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/okefenokee-national-wildlife-refuge-be-nominated-join-unesco-world-heritage-list\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;that it will nominate the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge for the UNESCO World Heritage List.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last April, Sen. Ossoff submitted a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-reiterates-formal-opposition-to-strip-mining-near-okefenokee-national-wildlife-refuge\/\">public comment<\/a>&nbsp;to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) opposing permits for a strip mine near the Okefenokee during the agency\u2019s public comment period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October 2023, Sen. Ossoff&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-delivering-upgrades-to-stephen-c-foster-state-park-near-okefenokee-national-wildlife-refuge\/\">delivered a $1.6 million Federal grant<\/a>&nbsp;through the Land and Water Conservation Fund to improve safety and connectivity within the park, while also taking steps to improve preservation measures at the campgrounds within the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September 2023, following Sen. Ossoff\u2019s bipartisan push, the National Park Service<a href=\"https:\/\/public-inspection.federalregister.gov\/2023-20719.pdf?utm_campaign=pi+subscription+mailing+list&amp;utm_source=federalregister.gov&amp;utm_medium=email\">announced it intended to nominate<\/a>&nbsp;the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge for UNESCO\u2019s World Heritage Site list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citing warnings from leading scientists and experts, Sen. Ossoff submitted in February 2023 his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/02.15.23_-Sen.-Ossoff-EPD-Public-Comment.pdf\">formal opposition<\/a>&nbsp;to the proposed strip mine next to the Okefenokee Swamp during a public comment period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September 2022, at Sen. Ossoff\u2019s invitation, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland joined him&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/readout-sen-ossoff-interior-secretary-deb-haaland-inspect-okefenokee-national-wildlife-refuge\/\">to survey the Refuge<\/a>&nbsp;and meet with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials on the Refuge\u2019s conservation status and environmental risks. They also heard directly from local leaders about the importance of protecting the Refuge for the communities in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Please find a transcript of Sen.
