Georgians who\u2019ve been unable to purchase homes because of large, out-of-state companies are invited to share their story at <\/em>ossoff.senate.gov\/homestory<\/em><\/a><\/u><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington, D.C. <\/strong>\u2014 U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is investigating large, out-of-state companies buying up Georgia homes and driving up home prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Sen. Ossoff launched inquiries with several of the top companies nationwide that are purchasing single-family homes across the State of Georgia, raising prices for families and reducing the supply of family homes available for purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, an investigation<\/a> by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, <\/em>\u201cAmerican Dream for Rent,\u201d detailed how out-of-state companies are buying up family homes and turning them into rental properties, driving up home prices and making it more difficult for families to purchase homes themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report last year<\/a>, large companies now own <\/strong>1 of every 4 single-family rental homes in metro Atlanta, the most impacted region in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, Sen. Ossoff is launching an investigation and requesting more information from 4 major companies including about their home purchases in Georgia, how many single-family homes they own, fees being charged to renters, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLarge out-of-state companies are buying up homes and pushing Georgia homebuyers out of the market,\u201d Sen. Ossoff said<\/strong>. \u201cI\u2019m launching this investigation to get answers for Georgia families who are struggling to afford rent and homeownership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Ossoff continues working to increase the supply of affordable housing and protect Georgia renters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last spring, Sen. Ossoff convened a hearing of the Senate Human Rights Subcommittee where tenants testified<\/a> about the mistreatment of tenants by landlords in Georgia and nationwide and threats to the safety of children in dangerous living conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Sens. Ossoff and Ashley Moody (R-FL) introduced<\/a> the bipartisan HELPER Act<\/em> of 2025, which would establish a new home loan program under the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) to help law enforcement, fire fighters, medical first responders, and teachers purchase homes in the communities they serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Sens. Ossoff and Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced<\/a> the bipartisan Veterans Home Loan Fairness Act <\/em>to help veterans and their families qualify for home loans through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Sen. Ossoff also introduced<\/a> the Access to Homeownership Act<\/em> to require landlords that receive financing through the Federal government, including through Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, for multifamily properties like apartment buildings to offer tenants the ability to have their on-time rental payments reported to credit bureaus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Ossoff has also delivered<\/a> Federal resources to Atlanta Habitat for Humanity, supporting its ongoing work in the Browns Mill Village Development, a mixed-income community of owner-occupied homes in Atlanta and has delivered<\/a> Federal resources to Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity supporting its work in the Lovejoy neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
