Ossoff Working Across the Aisle to Reduce Georgia\u2019s Doctor Shortage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Washington, D.C.&nbsp;\u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is working across the aisle to reduce the shortage of medical professionals in Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Ossoff is cosponsoring the bipartisan&nbsp;<em>Resident Education Deferred Interest Act<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>REDI Act)<\/em>, which would allow recent graduates of medical school to defer their student loan payments without interest while they serve in a medical or dental internship or residency program, aiming to attract more young professionals to go into the medical field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bipartisan bill was first introduced by Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and John Boozman (R-AR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no worse nightmare for any family than having a loved one who\u2019s sick but there are not enough doctors or nurses available to help in an emergency,\u201d<strong>&nbsp;Sen. Ossoff said.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cThat&#8217;s why I am working to bring Republicans and Democrats together to strengthen our healthcare workforce in Georgia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a 2022&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.ga.gov\/committees\/Documents\/GeorgiaHealthcareWorkforceCommissionFinalReport.pdf\">report<\/a>&nbsp;by the Georgia Healthcare Workforce Commission, Georgia&#8217;s health care industry is expected to need 239,000 new employees by 2032.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/store.aamc.org\/physician-education-debt-and-the-cost-to-attend-medical-school-2020-update.html\">report<\/a>&nbsp;by the Association of American Medical Colleges, the median education debt for medical school graduates was $200,000, and 73% of graduates reported having education debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Ossoff continues working to strengthen health care for Georgia families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February, Sens. Ossoff and Susan Collins (R-ME)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sens-ossoff-collins-introduce-bipartisan-bill-to-help-veterans-in-rural-areas-get-to-the-va\/\">introduced<\/a>&nbsp;the<em>&nbsp;Rural Veterans Transportation to Care Act<\/em>&nbsp;to help more veterans in rural areas get transportation to VA health facilities and access the health care benefits they\u2019ve earned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last November, Sen. Ossoff&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-strengthening-access-to-mental-health-counseling-for-georgia-students\/\">delivered<\/a>&nbsp;over $1.7 million through the&nbsp;<em>Bipartisan Safer Communities Act<\/em>&nbsp;to help hire and train more mental health counselors for students in Georgia schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October, Sen. Ossoff&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-strengthening-georgias-nursing-workforce\/\">delivered<\/a>&nbsp;Federal resources to strengthen nurse training programs across Georgia through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, Sen.
