Kamlager-Dove\u00a0Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Notify Loved Ones When Inmates Suffer Health Complications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Legislation will ensure families receive timely notifications of any health complications of incarcerated family members<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Families across Georgia have suffered from the prison system\u2019s failure to notify people of their relatives\u2019 health issues<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Washington, D.C. \u2014&nbsp;<\/strong>U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is continuing his work to safeguard human rights in Georgia\u2019s prisons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Sens. Ossoff and&nbsp;John&nbsp;Kennedy (R-LA) introduced the bipartisan&nbsp;<em>Family Notification of Death, Injury, or Illness in Custody Act&nbsp;<\/em>to help ensure family members are notified in a timely and compassionate manner&nbsp;in the event of the death or serious illness or injury&nbsp;of&nbsp;a&nbsp;loved one&nbsp;in custody.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA-37) is leading the companion bill in the U.S. House of Representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bipartisan bill would require the U.S. Department of Justice to establish best practices for family notification by issuing central guidance to the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and local and state institutions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToo often, the families of those incarcerated never find out about a serious illness, a life-threatening injury, or even the death of a loved one behind bars. That\u2019s why we are introducing this bipartisan reform legislation,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>Sen. Ossoff said.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Parents, children, and siblings deserve to know about the well-being of their family members. However, our current prison system does not require correctional facilities to notify the families of incarcerated people if their loved ones are seriously ill, injured, or deceased<strong>,\u201d said Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cIn 2016, Wakiesha Wilson tragically died while incarcerated, and her family members were never directly informed about her passing. It took them 18 days to finally see her, but it was already too late. No one should have to experience the agony of the unknown, which is why this bill is so important.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Families across Georgia have suffered from the prison system\u2019s failure to notify families of their relatives\u2019 health in recent years:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<em>The Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/em>, a&nbsp;Clayton County Jail&nbsp;inmate\u2019s daughter was never notified after her mother&nbsp;fell&nbsp;and suffered from serious injuries, including a collapsed lung&nbsp;that required hospitalization. Her daughter&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/crime--law\/family-wasn-told-clayton-county-inmate-spent-weeks-hospital-dying\/DXYrTcobj8FxvUkHvRMnKI\/\">only received notice of her death<\/a>&nbsp;once the mother\u2019s longtime boyfriend attempted to visit the jail and was told that she was no longer there. The jail did not provide the boyfriend nor the daughter&nbsp;with additional information on the mother\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In South Georgia, a&nbsp;woman was only&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.valdostadailytimes.com\/news\/local_news\/dying-behind-bars-families-jail-staff-deal-with-inmate-fatalities\/article_b0d7fa5d-c75d-532d-b5da-ee2aaa0f5ec5.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notified of her father\u2019s death<\/a>&nbsp;at Valdosta State Prison after a letter was returned to her stamped, \u201cReturn to sender: inmate dead.\u201d She was then unable to obtain any further information about her father\u2019s death from prison officials. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March of 2020,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wabe.org\/georgia-mom-continues-to-fight-for-justice-after-her-son-was-stabbed-to-death-at-macon-state-prison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a mother in Macon<\/a>&nbsp;was notified by an incarcerated individual, and not by Macon State Prison\u2019s staff, that her 23-year-old son was stabbed to death. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Ossoff has been a longtime advocate for improving transparency in the U.S. prison system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, Sens. Ossoff and Rev. Warnock&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/following-doj-investigation-sens-ossoff-rev-warnock-urge-state-of-georgia-to-swiftly-address-unconstitutional-conditions-in-state-prisons\/\">urged<\/a>&nbsp;Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Tyrone Oliver to&nbsp;promptly address the deeply concerning findings&nbsp;in&nbsp;the DOJ\u2019s report last month on Georgia\u2019s state prison system, which found conditions in Georgia\u2019s prisons \u201cviolate the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October, the U.S. Senate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoffs-bipartisan-bill-to-crack-down-on-contraband-organized-crime-in-federal-prisons-passes-u-s-senate\/\">passed<\/a>&nbsp;Sen. Ossoff\u2019s bipartisan<em>&nbsp;Lieutenant Osvaldo Albarati Stopping Prison Contraband Act&nbsp;<\/em>with bipartisan support, which&nbsp;would crack down on the smuggling of contraband cellphones into Federal prisons&nbsp;by upgrading the charge of smuggling of a contraband cellphone into a&nbsp;Federal&nbsp;prison from a misdemeanor offense to a felony.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, Sens. Ossoff and Reverend Warnock&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/24.06.26_DCRA-Reporting-Letter-signed.pdf\">launched an inquiry<\/a>&nbsp;with Attorney General Merrick Garland urging the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to strengthen policies aimed at tracking and collecting data about deaths in Federal, state, and local custody in order to better understand and mitigate risks inmates face while incarcerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, Sen.
