Washington, D.C. <\/strong>\u2014 The largest police union is urging Congress to pass U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff’s bipartisan bill to help law enforcement officers purchase their first homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), which has over 373,000 members nationwide, urged the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs to swiftly consider and pass Sen. Ossoff\u2019s bipartisan HELPER Act<\/em><\/a>, which would help law enforcement officers purchase their first home in the communities they serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The push from law enforcement comes as over 150 Republican and Democratic Members of Congress have co-sponsored the bill, with momentum growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis legislation will give the men and women of law enforcement, who work tirelessly every day to protect our communities, more opportunities to find homes they can afford on a public servant\u2019s salary by creating a home loan benefits program for first responders and educators based on the popular and successful VA home loan program available to our nation\u2019s veterans,\u201d FOP National President Patrick Yoes wrote to Senate Banking Committee Chairman Sherrod Brown, who helped introduce the bill, and Ranking Member Tim Scott.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bipartisan bill would establish a new, one-time use home loan program under the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) for first responders and teachers to purchase their first home \u2014 modeled after a similar & successful VA home loan program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HELPER Act<\/em> would eliminate the upfront home purchase costs and the monthly mortgage insurance premium for those who serve our communities \u2014 including teachers, law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Ossoff continues working to support the men and women in law enforcement who work tirelessly every day to protect our communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
