Ossoff on Unveiling of Stamp Honoring Late Congressman John Lewis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff released the following statement on today\u2019s Congressional Ceremony unveiling the USPS stamp in honor of the late Congressman John Lewis.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCongressman Lewis was an American hero, a civil rights giant, and a revered Georgian. This stamp is a continuation of our collective national effort to magnify Congressman Lewis\u2019 indelible legacy and monumental impact on American history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-leading-push-to-commemorate-congressman-john-lewis-life-with-new-postal-stamp\/\">Sen. Ossoff urged<\/a>&nbsp;the U.S. Postal Services\u2019 Citizens\u2019 Stamp Advisory Committee to commemorate Congressman&nbsp;Lewis\u2019 legacy with this honor. Following his push, USPS announced late last year they will honor Georgia\u2019s civil rights giant on a stamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Ossoff began his career in public service working for Congressman Lewis. In 2021, Sen. Ossoff&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/sens-ossoff-romney-warnock-rep-williams-introduce-bicameral-resolution-honoring-late-congressman-john-lewis-81st-birthday\/\">introduced<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ossoff\/status\/1366557309845999616?s=20\">passed<\/a>&nbsp;a bicameral resolution honoring the life and legacy of the late Congressman as his first piece of legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis stamp celebrates the life and legacy of civil rights leader and U.S. Rep. John Lewis (1940-2020) of Georgia,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/newsroom\/national-releases\/2022\/1213-usps-reveals-additional-stamps-for-2023.htm\"><strong>the U.S. Postal Service wrote last year.<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;\u201cDevoted to equality and justice for all Americans, Lewis spent more than 30 years in Congress steadfastly defending and building on key civil rights gains that he had helped achieve in the 1960s. Even in the face of hatred and violence, as well as some 45 arrests, Lewis remained resolute in his commitment to what he liked to call \u201cgood trouble.\u201d The stamp features a photograph of Lewis taken by Marco Grob on assignment for the Aug. 26, 2013, issue of Time magazine. The selvage showcases a photograph of Lewis taken by Steve Schapiro in 1963 outside a workshop about nonviolent protest in Clarksdale, MS.
