Ossoff Leads Bipartisan Push to Protect Journalists Worldwide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Senators call for establishment of new UN Special Envoy to protect&nbsp;journalists<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Nearly 1,000&nbsp;journalists have been killed in the last decade across the world<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Washington, D.C.&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2014 U.S. Senator and former investigative&nbsp;journalist&nbsp;Jon Ossoff is leading a bipartisan push to protect&nbsp;journalists and press freedom around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sens. Ossoff, Thom Tillis (R-NC), Tim Kaine (D-VA), and Roy Blunt (R-MO) are calling on U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the United States\u2019 UN Delegation to push for the creation a new Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Safety of&nbsp;Journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery day, around the world, courageous&nbsp;journalists regularly put themselves in harm\u2019s way in pursuit of truth and accountability. They accept risks to their lives in service to the public. They are a check on the powerful and those that abuse their authority,\u201d<strong>the Senators wrote to Sec. Blinken.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cProtecting the freedom and safety of the press to carry on this vital work is a fundamental American value and worthy of promotion on the international stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/barometer\">Reporters Without Borders<\/a>, at least 910&nbsp;journalists have been killed over the last decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before his election to the Senate, Sen. Ossoff produced internationally broadcast investigations of war crimes, official corruption, and organized crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since his election, Sen. Ossoff has championed&nbsp;press&nbsp;freedom&nbsp;at home and abroad. Sen. Ossoff&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RuuQWY--kew\">pushed<\/a>&nbsp;Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson during her confirmation hearings to reiterate her commitments to&nbsp;freedoms of speech and of the&nbsp;press, and he has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S2FIoxkYNVM\">frequently spoken out<\/a>&nbsp;against the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s targeting of&nbsp;journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/UN-Special-Envoy-for-the-Safety-of-Journalists-Support-Letter_September-2022.pdf\">Click here<\/a>&nbsp;to read Sen.
