Ossoff Working to Protect Tybee Island from Growing Storm Surge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Washington, D.C.&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013\u2013 U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff introduced a bill to protect Tybee Island from the effects of growing storm surge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Ossoff, alongside Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock, today introduced the&nbsp;<em>Tybee Island Storm Risk Management Act<\/em>&nbsp;to ensure Tybee Island has the resources it needs to protect from sea level rise, storm surge, coastal flooding, and other impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis bill will help protect the beautiful Tybee Island as part of my ongoing effort to support, protect, and invest in coastal Georgia,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>Sen. Ossoff said<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRegular renourishment of the City of Tybee Island\u2019s beach is crucial for protecting Tybee Island\u2019s economy and the safety of its residents from damage due to storm surges and coastal flooding,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>said Sen. Rev. Warnock<\/strong>. \u201cFor nearly 50 years, the federal government and the City of Tybee Island have been partnering on the Tybee Island Beach Erosion Control Project to make sure residents and visitors are able to enjoy the island for years to&nbsp;come. I\u2019m proud to join Senator Ossoff to ensure the long-term protection of one of Georgia\u2019s most cherished natural treasures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tybee Island has been one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the state of Georgia since the 1870s and has experienced 10 inches of sea level rise since 1935.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new legislation by Sens. Ossoff and Rev. Warnock will ensure Tybee Island can continue to implement coastal storm risk management projects for at least 50 more years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis legislation is a first for Tybee Island. My sincerest thanks and appreciation to Senators Ossoff and Warnock for their support and action in their efforts to sustain our coastline, protect properties and lives, and help ensure economic growth through a long-term resiliency plan,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>said Tybee Island Mayor Shirley Sessions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTybee&nbsp;is important to Georgia, and beach renourishment is important to&nbsp;Tybee.
