Ossoff&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/es\/press-releases\/photos-and-video-sen-ossoff-surveys-okefenokee-swamp-briefed-by-u-s-fish-and-wildlife-service-on-protection-of-wildlife-refuge\/\"><em>surveyed<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;the wildlife refuge in May and met with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Washington, D.C.&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013\u2013 U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is continuing his work to protect the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, a sacred natural resource in the state of Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Ossoff urged the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to take charge of the review process of the proposed mining project, which the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtoc.com\/2019\/09\/20\/draft-add-pdf-epa-weighs-mining-proposal-okefenokee-swamp\/\">EPA said in 2019<\/a>&nbsp;could \u201ccause adverse effects to water quality and the life stages of aquatic life or other wildlife dependent on aquatic systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDue to the unique and irreplaceable nature of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, its significance to Georgia and the Nation, and recent Federal court rulings invalidating the Navigable Waters Protection Rule, I urge the EPA to exercise its special cases authority to revoke the October 2020 jurisdictional determination,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>Sen. Ossoff wrote to the EPA<\/strong>. \u201cBy bringing this project back within Federal review, the EPA will ensure that the Okefenokee Refuge receives the protection it deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This marks the next step in Sen. Ossoff\u2019s continued efforts to protect the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April, he joined Senator Reverend&nbsp;Warnock to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.warnock.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/04.28.2021-Letter-FWS-Okefenokee-Refuge.pdf\">call for<\/a>&nbsp;a rigorous assessment of the potential environmental impacts of the proposed mining development.&nbsp;Sen.
