Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is backing a bipartisan bill to support military victims of sexual assault.
Sen. Ossoff is cosponsoring the bipartisan Servicemembers and Veterans Empowerment and Support Act to make it easier for survivors of military sexual trauma to apply for and receive benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
According to VA, about 1 in 3 women and 1 in 50 men report experiencing military sexual trauma. The bipartisan bill, led by Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), would eliminate bureaucratic hurdles for survivors applying for disability benefits from VA.
“Too many of our nation’s heroes continue to be targeted while they serve,” Sen. Ossoff said. “That is why I am supporting bipartisan legislation to ensure that veterans who are survivors of sexual trauma are able to receive the benefits that they earned defending our Nation.”
Sen. Ossoff continues to work to strengthen protections for survivors of sexual abuse.
In 2024, Sen. Ossoff delivered over $30 million in Federal funding through the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to the Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) to strengthen services for victims of violent crime throughout the state.
Also in 2024, Sen. Ossoff delivered funding to the Cobb County District Attorney’s office to help expand the county’s Family Advocacy Center (FAC) that serves victims of crime, including domestic violence, human trafficking, sexualassault, and child abuse.
In 2022, Sen. Ossoff introduced the bipartisan Protecting our Servicemembers through Proven Methods Act of 2022 to study and strengthen prevention methods against sexual assault, domestic violence, sexual harassment, child abuse, and more.
